STEM Discovery Lab – A Programme for discovering the future in STEM
STEM Discovery Lab is an educational and inspirational programme designed for girls, aiming to bring science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEM/STEAM) closer through a practical, creative, and empowering approach. The programme supports participants in building self-confidence, critical thinking skills, and a positive relationship with STEM fields, while helping them recognise their role in the digital and technological future.
What does the programme include?
STEM Discovery Lab is designed as a series of sessions and workshops that combine:
- interactive learning,
- small-group work,
- hands-on experiments,
- creative thinking,
- and the connection of STEM concepts with real-life situations.
The focus is not on “right answers,” but on the learning process itself—asking questions, experimenting, making mistakes, and improving.
Sessions implemented so far
Session 1: “My STEM World”
In the first session, participants explored what STEM means to them through discussion and creative activities, reflecting on challenges, learning, and personal definitions of success. By creating a personal “STEM persona,” the girls mapped their own interests, talents, and fears, experiencing STEM as something approachable, friendly, and accessible. The session concluded with a creative symbol that participants keep as a source of motivation beyond the programme.
Session 2: STEM experiments and real-life challenges
The second session was fully practical and interactive. Through group work, participants:
- explored how artificial intelligence works and what distinguishes human intelligence from machine intelligence,
- learned algorithmic thinking through everyday tasks,
- analysed data and made data-driven decisions,
- and developed STEM-based solutions to real-life problems from their daily lives.
Through these activities, the girls learned that STEM is not just theory, but a way of thinking and a tool for improving the world around us.
What’s next?
The STEM Discovery Lab programme will continue with several additional sessions and thematic workshops. These upcoming activities will further explore different STEM and STEAM fields, include meetings with inspiring role models, hands-on projects, and provide additional opportunities to explore educational and career pathways in STEM. This programme is part of the STREAM IT project, which is implemented by the Foundation for Management and Industrial Research in a consortium with 21 partners from 20 different countries. In the implementation of the workshops, the MIR Foundation collaborated with Startup Club Skopje, who supported the entire process of delivering the workshops.
