Interview with PhD Maja Anachkova: The Leading Role of Millennial Women in Science and Industry
We have created a platform for millennial women working in the industry who are ready to share their success stories. We launched a series of interviews to highlight their inspiring experiences and achievements, focusing on women who are transforming the world around them. In this edition, we spoke with PhD Maja Anachkova, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Skopje, “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University in Skopje.

Can you tell us more about the company where you are working and its objective?
I work as an assistant professor at the Institute of Mechanics within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Skopje. The Institute of Mechanics maintains the Mechatronics program as part of its activities. The institute is dedicated to educating students in advanced interdisciplinary fields and applied research. At its core are scientific and educational achievements in the fields of mechanics and mechatronics. The priority of the Institute of Mechanics is the development of scientific and research activities aligned with global trends in mechanics and mechatronics, incorporating modern teaching materials and methodologies into the educational process.
What challenges have you faced as a millennial woman working in your industry, and how have you overcome them?
Women in engineering professions often face unique challenges arising from longstanding gender disparities in the field. Despite increased efforts to promote diversity, I believe many women encounter biases, stereotypes, and underrepresentation in leadership positions, which can affect their confidence and career advancement. In my case, the culture and environment of my workplace, as a professor in academia, have never made me feel undervalued or less capable. On the contrary, I have always believed I could justify my position, and I have proven it. Hard work and dedication do not recognize gender, and whenever someone doubts this, it’s important to prove them wrong. In any case, confidence, attitude, and perseverance are key. Addressing these challenges requires both systemic changes and individual shifts in women’s attitudes toward their environment—and, more importantly, toward themselves. I am optimistic that prejudices are becoming less prevalent today, but we must continuously motivate and encourage women to value themselves and their potential.

What competencies or skills do you believe are most valuable for millennial women in the workplace, and why?
Critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to find innovative solutions can help women tackle the complex challenges of modern life. Adaptability to embrace change and learn from failures, fostering a growth mind-set, is essential in today’s fast-paced world. Strong communication skills are also crucial, enabling women to effectively articulate their ideas, advocate for themselves, and build networks. Collaboration and teamwork are vital competencies. Moreover, women should not only excel in their roles but also inspire future generations to break barriers and redefine outdated ideas of success.
How can millennial women continue to develop and refine their skills in the industry?
Women can continue developing and refining their skills by taking advantage of professional growth opportunities. This includes participating in networking events and maintaining social relationships across diverse fields. Engaging in multidisciplinary projects can help them identify areas for improvement and expand their expertise. Additionally, cultivating a strong personal brand and identity, as well as embracing creative leadership, can open doors to new opportunities. By maintaining a growth mind-set and consistently setting new career goals, women can position themselves as adaptable and forward-thinking professionals.

How do you think millennial women bring a unique perspective to the industry compared to previous generations?
Women today contribute a unique perspective to every field and career. Growing up in the digital era, they are technologically skilled in using innovative tools to solve problems and enhance productivity. Their experiences in navigating societal changes have fostered resilience and a keen awareness of social and environmental issues, which they should integrate into their professional strategies. The new generation of career-focused women excels in shaping more dynamic and progressive industries.
How do you see the role of mentorship and support networks playing a part in the advancement and success of millennial women in the workplace?

Mentorship and support networks are crucial for advancing and ensuring the success of women in the workplace. A strong mentor can provide insights into career challenges, help build leadership skills, and identify growth opportunities while serving as a source of inspiration. Support networks, whether formal or informal, create a sense of community and encourage collaboration. These connections not only boost confidence but also facilitate access to diverse perspectives and opportunities for career advancement.
The Series of interviews are part of the project EMPOWERING – Empowering M-Women in Industry which focuses on millennial women (born between 1980 and 1995) working in manufacturing industries, aiming to support their professional education, skill development, and career advancement. The mission extends beyond individual empowerment to fostering European collaboration and networking, which are essential for success in today’s world.
